Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden

Recommended by a Canadian friend. This book really follows a Cree Indian who leaves his aunt and, with his best friend, goes off to fight in WWI. I really enjoy war stories and have a particular fascination and respect for what fighting must have been like in the trenches. The book flickers between his life as a Cree who lives and survives on the land, and his life in the trenches. It's fascinating how he uses his native skills to survive and negotiate the battlefields in France.

I really liked this. At the end of the day it's a work of fiction but it still manages to give some sense of how life was in the trenches and how much the main character depended on the support of his friend. I'm going for another 4/5.
